Halévy family

Halévy family
A family of French composers, writers, and historians. Jacques Fromental Lévy, or Jacques Halévy as he is known, was born in Paris and won second grand prize in the prix de Rome in 1819. Professor at the Conservatoire, he had georges bizet and charles gounod as his students. Of the 30 operas that he composed, his great success, La Juive (1835), is particularly noteworthy. Ludovic Halévy (1834-1908), the nephew of Jacques Halévy, was born in Paris. A dramatic author (Froufrou, 1869), and novelist (L'Abbé Constantin, 1882), he owes his reputation to the librettos that he composed for the operettas of jacques offenbach (La Belle Hélène, 1864; La Vie parisienne, 1866; La Grande-Duchesse de Gerolstein, 1867; La Périchole, 1868). Ludovic Halévy also collaborated on the libretto for Carmen by Georges Bizet. He was elected to the Académie Française in 1884. Élie Halévy (1870-1937), born at Étretat, was the son of Ludovic Halévy. Author of theoretical works (Théorie platonicienne des sciences, 1896; La Formation du radicalisme philosophique, 1901-04), he also published Histoire du peuple anglais au xixe siècle (1913-23). Daniel Halévy (1872-1962), brother of Élie Halévy, who was born in Paris, was also a historian. A friend of charles péguy, he collaborated on Cahiers de la quinzaine. Author of articles on Friedrich Nietzsche, Charles Péguy, JULES MICHELET, PIERRE-JOSEPH PROUDHON, and an Essai sur le mouvement ouvrier en France (1910), he has also made historical analyses of the beginnings of the Third Republic (La Fin des notables, 1936; La République des ducs, 1937), as well as an Essai sur l'accélération de l'histoire (1948).
